Artist Statement for Zine

In my zine, “Inanimate objects doing intimate things,” my goal was to create a light-hearted approach to some of the nasty and intimate things EVERY human does. By replacing the identity of the people into inanimate objects, I in turn, create an ambiguous figure that takes the place of one individual. This choice was made to create not only a comedic approach, but also to allow the viewer to see themselves, or whoever they please, to do the tasks within each page. Furthermore, my choice of inanimate objects has to do with each intimate moment. For example, the irony within the fire alarm smoking a cigarette plays on the idea of satire. The recycling bin that replaces the female's face in page five represents the notion that everything we eat is… essentially recycled. Another example of these relationships come into play in page four, when the couple having intercourse outside have the faces of a water bottle and lighter. Fire and water don’t mix, but that didn’t stop them from doing the dirty! Overall, I wanted this zine to compliment someone’s coffee table or sit on top of the toilet bowl for people to read when they are completing an intimate moment themselves. Instead of being embarrassed about the things we all do, why not laugh at them instead!
