Reading Blog #3 (Coming to terms with Internet Art)

linu3935

For this projects reading blog, we had to read “Web Work: A History of Internet Art”. This reading helped me to define what internet art is. As a traditional visual artist, I rarely utilize digital platforms to create pieces, however this class, and especially this reading, has taught me the power behind digital art. One of the first things that really surprised me was when internet art came into existence (it is much older than I thought). It is about 6 years older than me… making it, in my opinion, one of the newest mediums in the art world. Another thing that got me curious was the different projects that came out of early net.art. My favorite piece talked about in this article was Heath Bunting’s “King’s Cross Phone-in”. Bunting utilized the internet to create a performative and inclusive art piece in which he listed the phone numbers of multiple phone booth’s around London and had people call them from their home. The idea was that these phone calls were connecting random strangers from all around London and the world. As someone who is super into conceptual art as well as participatory art, Bunting’s piece made me smile! Going off that point, I’ve never really considered how inclusive internet art is, especially in this day and age. Galleries and exhibit spaces can be hard or impossible to get to for some people. Also, many traditional art spaces may stray people who don’t consider themselves “artistic” away from experiencing art. However, the internet not only allows everyone to actively participate and discover seemingly infinite examples of art, it also connects strangers together, creating community.
